Prohibition
Political:
During the year of 1919, the 18th amendment was enforced which prohibited alcohol. The Volstead Act in 1919 was the one that carried out the 18th Ammendment and it "made the world safer for hypocrisy." The Act specified that "no person shall manufacture, sell, barter, transport, import, export, deliver, furnish or possess any intoxicating liquor except as authorized by this act"
Economic:
Because of all the prohibition acts on the prohibition of alcohol, there was no more cheap drinks which made the soldiers and laborers very angry. Now drinks were higher and difficult to find. This caused a big outrage amongst the Americans at the time.
Social:
- legal abolition of alcohol was especially popular in the South and the West
- attacked the Western way of life: prostitution, crime, and public drunkenness
- gangsters such as "Scarface" Al Capone ravaged cities
- crime rate increased to shocking levels
